(Version française đ«đ·Â ci-dessous !)
Hello everyone,
Before we get started with this short summer newsletter: a warm welcome to those of you who have just joined the adventure! If you have a little time, you could begin with this newsletter. It dates back almost two years and tells the story of how the project started (the archives are here).
Around the world | | | More than 6,100 machines are now installed in every corner of the globe! And my greatest satisfaction is seeing just how delighted their "owners" are. Judge for yourself, with a few recent messages:
"This is just brilliant! Iâm an absolute fan"
"Dad loves it, âla machineâ is an awesome present."
"Beyond the lovely pop design, itâs a piece of nonsense that gives things meaning again!"
"I love My Machine! Â I love explaining where it comes from. Â It leaves nobody indifferent!"
"I love it, I havenât stopped laughing yet."
"La Machine is the most funny, wonderfull and lovely peace in the house."
"La Machine is brilliant⊠so much so that Iâve just ordered a second one"
Jean-Michel Jarre | | | For a radio show recorded recently, I picked two pieces of music to illustrate the theme of "la machine" â one of them being OxygĂšne Part IV.
Fate then decided to give me a rather surprising wink: the very next day, Jean-Michel Jarre himself (who, unbeknownst to me, had already ordered a machine) sent me these few words:
"Surreal and poetic â bravo again, I really do love it! And what a lovely coincidence: for OxygĂšneâs anniversary  Iâm releasing a big book called⊠Machines." Jean-Michel Jarre (translated from French)
So many coincidencesâŠ
In any case, knowing that he likes the machine is a source of indescribable pride for me and for the whole team.
Thank you so much, Jean-Michel! | Production is running (and Iâm already thinking about Christmas đ
đ»)
Production is in full swing, no summer break for NanoGiga, who keep manufacturing, assembling and shipping without pause. All European orders go out in August (except for those of you who asked us to hold them), and on the US side a second pallet has already arrived, with a third following in two weeks.
Good news: weâre heading into the autumn with a little stock in hand.
And speaking of autumn⊠yes, I know: itâs 38°C outside, there are wildfires everywhere, and here I am already thinking about Christmas. But I donât really have a choice: now is the moment when I have to decide how many machines to produce for the gift season.
Short of having Elon Musk's bank account to launch 25,000 machines without a second thought (though with his money, I suspect he'd go straight for 2.5 million), I'll have to play it tight: estimate end-of-year sales as precisely as possible, so as to avoid both running dry in November and a pile of unsold boxes sitting under the tree in January.
So it's a crystal ball and a simple constraint: I can only build as many machines as I can afford to leave sitting on a shelf. Accountants call this working capital requirement. Add Excel and Claude to the mix, and that's what's keeping me busy right now. In the middle of yet another heatwave! | | | Hawthorn | | | You may be wondering: what on earth is the connection between this magnificent textile artwork by Mercedes Luis-Fuentes and la machine?
Well, itâs a lovely story of bartering! Two machines (one of them silent, at Mercedesâ express request) in exchange for this piece, which now takes pride of place in my workshop in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, right next to the fake Tinguely :-)
Many thanks to Mercedes (and to Christophe, who took care of getting it to Paris).
And if you feel like doing a swap too, please donât hesitate to get in touch!
Tutorials for repairing your machine | | | Even with a production process that now runs smoothly, a machine occasionally shows signs of weakness â most often a slightly loose arm or, more rarely, a temperamental servo motor (even though they are tested and of very good quality).
So I really donât regret having designed everything with repairability in mind! Iâve made a few videos explaining the process. And if something goes wrong, I send you the spare part, you carry out the repair yourself, and as a bonus I give you a discount on a new machine!
A tribute to the original | | | To finish, Iâd like to show you Philâs version. Phil worked at Bell Labs (!!) and chose to pay tribute to the original machine by modifying the arm so that it matches a little more closely the description Arthur C. Clarke gave of it:
"Nothing could be simpler. It is merely a small wooden casket, the size and shape of a cigar box, with a single switch on one face.Â
When you throw the switch, there is an angry, purposeful buzzing. The lid slowly rises, and from beneath it emerges a hand. The hand reaches down, turns the switch off and retreats into the box. With the finality of a closing coffin, the lid snaps shut, the buzzing ceases and peace reigns once more. "
The psychological effect, if you do not know what to expect, is devastating. There is something unspeakably sinister about a machine that does nothing - absolutely nothing - except switch itself off."
(Also absolutely worth reading: the New York Times article.) | | | Thatâs all for today!
Have a great summer, and see you soon!

"Dad loves it, âla machineâ is an awesome present.
" Jâadore Ma Machine !  Jâadore expliquer lâorigine.  Elle ne laisse personne indiffĂ©rent!"
"I love it, I haven't stopped laughing yet."
"La Machine is the most funny, wonderfull and lovely peace in the house."
(A lire absolument aussi, l'article du New York Times). | | | VoilĂ . C'est tout pour aujourd'hui !
Bon été et à bientÎt !
