Les chorégraphies et les sons.

La conception des sons, des comportements et des chorégraphies de la machine est le fruit du travail de deux artisans (et artistes) : Alexis et Antoine.

Plus de 300 sons ont déjà été composés par Alexis (il y en aura davantage encore dans la version finale). C'est un travail d'orfèvre : Alexis restreint sa production à une dizaine par jour afin d’éviter toute redondance et de ne pas perdre en fraîcheur. Les nouveaux sons sont extraordinaires (ce n'est pas moi qui le dis) !

Pour les chorégraphies, Antoine a conçu un logiciel de création et d’édition afin de pouvoir — enfin ! — créer ces mouvements de bras « à la main ».

Prototype industriel

Voilà, on y est (presque) !

La carte électronique est désormais finalisée, et j’ai pu assembler, non sans émotion, le tout premier prototype du produit final. Bien qu’il soit encore composé de pièces imprimées en résine, l’ensemble fonctionne parfaitement.

Je parle d’émotion, mais j'étais surtout en proie à une très grande nervosité. À tel point que, constatant que le bras cessait de bouger dès que la carte était insérée dans la coque, j’ai aussitôt imaginé des scénarios d’interférences avec le haut-parleur ou la batterie. Paniqué, j’ai immédiatement informé Philippe et Paul, vidéos à l’appui, pour leur démontrer la réalité du phénomène.

Paul m'a alors tranquillement expliqué que l’accéléromètre avait été implanté à 180 degrés sur la carte finale par rapport à la version précédente, et que donc... la machine s'endormait si j’utilisais l’ancien firmware. C'était simplement la gravité qui était en cause.

Là, j'ai compris mon degré de fatigue. Vingt-cinq ans à concevoir des objets plus ou moins connectés pour en arriver à un diagnostic aussi farfelu (l'influence de la pleine lune aurait été presque plus plausible) !

Bref. Ça marche.

Entre le premier prototype réalisé en mars 2024 et ce prototype industriel, vingt mois se seront écoulés. C'est fou. On pourrait légitimement se demander ce que j’ai fait pendant vingt mois. La réponse est simple : concevoir le produit, le mener jusqu’à l’industrialisation et, surtout, en assurer le financement grâce à cette campagne de précommandes.

Le servo-moteur de la machine

J’ai rencontré de sérieux déboires avec le servomoteur de la machine. J’utilisais jusqu’alors un modèle standard, le MG90S. On en trouve absolument partout — et c’est précisément là que réside le problème.

Ce servomoteur est copié, recopié et encore reproduit, au point qu’il est impossible de commander deux lots strictement identiques. Cela ne serait pas rédhibitoire si les écarts de qualité entre les lots n’étaient pas aussi importants.

C’est ainsi que je me suis retrouvé avec un « échantillon » de cinquante moteurs dont environ 10 % avaient tendance à se bloquer puis à griller, généralement au bout d’une quarantaine d’heures d’utilisation continue — ce qui représente soit dit en passant un nombre considérable de mouvements. Jusqu’alors, je n’avais jamais eu de soucis.

J’ai donc finalement abandonné ce modèle générique au profit d’un servomoteur Adeept, le AD002. Il est mécaniquement compatible et, surtout, son origine est clairement identifiée, je sais qui le fabrique, ce qui me mettra à l’abri des déconvenues et de ce genre de remarques :

C'est avec beaucoup de joie et de soulagement que j'ai confié à NanoGiga la fabrication des cartes électroniques, l'assemblage et l'expédition de la machine.

J'ai rencontré NanoGiga grace à un ami de la machine : Bertrand Jomard. Suite à la précédente newsletter, dans laquelle j'expliquais que je n'avais pas encore sélectionné le fabricant de la carte, il m'a parlé du groupe IN-TI et de son entité NanoGiga qui se trouve à 40 minutes de Villeneuve-sur-Yonne (à Villemandeur dans le Loiret).

Après une réunion en visio et une visite de leur unité de production, je leur ai confié "la machine". Merci Bertrand ! Et merci à toute l'équipe NanoGiga dont Marina, Nicolas et Sylvain.

Les pièces plastiques, elles, sont fabriquées à Louvigny, en Normandie, par Axindus.

Le concept de "Meta Neutral"

Quelques mots sur le marketing (tout le monde adore le marketing.)

Vous vous rappelez le concept de "Meta Neutral" ? Et bien depuis le Black Friday, je suis passé à "Zero Meta".

Pourquoi ?

C’est assez simple : pendant le Black Friday, les internautes cliquaient frénétiquement sur les publicités de la machine, mais ne l’achetaient pas, faute d’une remise à –50 %. Puis est venue la période de recherche des cadeaux de Noël — et cette année encore, Noël tombant bien le 25 décembre, et non en février, j'ai trouvé qu'il y avait trop d'adversité.

Bref, j'ai décidé de tout arrêter.

L'avantage c'est que je ne dépense plus d'argent pour rien. L'inconvénient c'est que les ventes ont été divisée par dix (environ). C'est dire l'importance de la publicité dans ce monde.

Je reprendrai tout ça après Noël ! J'ai quand même hâte que la machine soit disponible pour que la terre entière s'aperçoive à quel point elle est indispensable.

J'ai néanmoins commencé à faire de la pub sur Pinterest, ça marche un peu mais moins que Meta. J'ai aussi contacté VeryBritishProblems pour qu'il fasse un post. J'adorerais. Et aussi, le 22 décembre la machine passe dans la Matinale de TF1 !

Ah ! Et aussi : Je travaille en ce moment sur la façon de parler de la machine à ceux qui ne la connaissent pas encore. Et je me suis dit que les meilleurs mots,

c'est peut-être vous qui les avez.

La machine dans la liste des 100 cadeaux de "On refait Le Mac"

Un immense merci à Laurent Pantanacce (salut Laurent, je sais que tu es là !) de ORLM pour sa présentation de la machine dans l'émission "100 cadeaux Tech pour cette fin d'année" ! Ça a fait bondir les ventes !

Le packaging

C’est Elium Studio qui prend en charge la conception du packaging. L’idée est de créer un emballage entièrement en carton, simple et peu imprimé, afin qu’il puisse être facilement recyclé — à condition de le jeter dans la bonne poubelle !

Ci-dessous, vous pouvez découvrir le concept retenu.

Deux options de fabrication sont envisagées pour ce « pack » : soit un carton très solide, qui servira également de boîte d’expédition protégée par une pochette plastique, soit un sur-emballage standard. À suivre.

Certains se souviendront que j’avais évoqué, pour le premier lot, un packaging « collector ». Faut-il y voir un lien ? Que nenni ! Le packaging du premier lot sera doté d’un fourreau dessiné par Benjamin Rossignol (lui ai-je bien confirmé la chose, d'ailleurs, je ne sais plus...).

(Pardon Elium, je sais que vous n'aimez pas quand je diffuse des images de vos rendus. mais là on est entre nous et en plus c'est très beau !).

La mosaïque

J’avais déjà parlé de la mosaïque réalisée par Pascale pour le lancement du 12 septembre — il y a une éternité !

Un soir, sur un coup de tête, j’ai mobilisé mes deux fils, Armand et Blaise, pour m’aider à la coller quelque part dans Paris. Munis d’une petite échelle et de nos hoodies pour passer inaperçus… splash ! La machine était sur le mur.

Quelques passants sont passés, mais ça ne les a pas vraiment intéressés. Dommage, car je prévois d’organiser un concours : plusieurs mosaïques seront disséminées dans Paris, et celui ou celle qui en trouvera une en premier remportera une machine !

The choreographies and sounds.

The design of the sounds, behaviors, and choreographies of la machine is the result of the work of two craftsmen (and artists): Alexis and Antoine.

More than 300 sounds have already been composed by Alexis (there will be even more in the final version). It's painstaking work: Alexis limits his production to about ten per day to avoid any redundancy and to keep things fresh. The new sounds are extraordinary (and that's not just me saying so)!

For the choreographies, Antoine designed creation and editing software to finally be able to create these arm movements "by hand."

Prototype industriel

Here we are (almost)!

The electronic board is now finalized, and I was able to assemble, not without emotion, the very first prototype of the final product. Although it's still made of resin-printed parts, everything works perfectly.

I mention emotion, but I was mostly gripped by great nervousness. So much so that, noticing that the arm stopped moving as soon as the board was inserted into the shell, I immediately imagined scenarios of interference with the speaker or the battery. Panicked, I immediately informed Philippe and Paul, with videos to back it up, to demonstrate the reality of the phenomenon.

Paul then calmly explained to me that the accelerometer had been implanted 180 degrees differently on the final board compared to the previous version, and that therefore... la machine was going to sleep if I used the old firmware. It was simply gravity that was at fault.

That's when I understood my level of fatigue. Twenty-five years designing more or less connected objects to arrive at such a far-fetched diagnosis (the influence of the full moon would have been almost more plausible)!

Anyway. It works.

Between the first prototype made in March 2024 and this industrial prototype, twenty months will have passed. It's crazy. One could legitimately wonder what I did for twenty months. The answer is simple: design the product, take it through to industrialization and, above all, ensure its financing thanks to this pre-order campaign.

March 2024 - December 2026

The servo motor of la machine

I encountered serious setbacks with la machine's servo motor. Until then, I had been using a standard model, the MG90S. You can find them absolutely everywhere — and that's precisely where the problem lies.

This servo motor is copied, recopied, and reproduced again, to the point that it's impossible to order two strictly identical batches. This wouldn't be prohibitive if the quality differences between batches weren't so significant.

That's how I ended up with a "sample" of fifty motors, about 10% of which tended to jam and then burn out, generally after about forty hours of continuous use — which, by the way, represents a considerable number of movements. Until then, I had never had any problems.

So I finally abandoned this generic model in favor of an Adeept servo motor, the AD002. It's mechanically compatible and, above all, its origin is clearly identified — I know who manufactures it, which will protect me from disappointments and from this kind of remark:

It is with great joy and relief that I entrusted NanoGiga with the manufacturing of the electronic boards, assembly, and shipping of la machine.

I met NanoGiga thanks to a friend of la machine: Bertrand Jomard.

Following the previous newsletter, in which I explained that I hadn't yet selected the board manufacturer, he told me about the IN-TI group and its NanoGiga entity, which is located 40 minutes from Villeneuve-sur-Yonne (in Villemandeur in the Loiret).

After a video meeting and a visit to their production facility, I entrusted them with la machine. Thank you Bertrand! And thank you to the entire NanoGiga team including Marina, Nicolas, and Sylvain.

The "Meta Neutral" concept

A few words about marketing (everyone loves marketing.)

Remember the "Meta Neutral" concept? Well, since Black Friday, I've moved to "Zero Meta."

Why?

It's quite simple: during Black Friday, internet users were frantically clicking on la machine's ads, but weren't buying it, due to the lack of a –50% discount. Then came the Christmas gift search period — and this year again, with Christmas falling on December 25th and not in February, I found there was too much adversity.

In short, I decided to stop everything.

The advantage is that I'm no longer spending money for nothing. The disadvantage is that sales have been divided by ten (approximately). That shows the importance of advertising in this world.

I'll resume all that after Christmas! I still can't wait for la machine to be available so that the whole world realizes how essential it is.

Nevertheless, I've started advertising on Pinterest, it works a bit but less than Meta. I've also contacted VeryBritishProblems to get them to do a post. I'd love that. And also, on December 23rd, la machine will be featured on TF1's morning show!

Oh! And also: I'm currently working on how to talk about la machine to those who don't know about it yet. And I thought that the best words might be yours.

La machine in the list of 100 gifts from "On refait Le Mac"

A huge thank you to Laurent Pantanacce (hi Laurent, I know you're there!) from ORLM for his presentation of la machine in the show "100 Tech Gifts for this end of year"! It made sales jump!

The packaging

Elium Studio is handling the packaging design. The idea is to create entirely cardboard packaging, simple and minimally printed, so that it can be easily recycled — provided you throw it in the right bin!

Below, you can see the chosen concept.

Two manufacturing options are being considered for this "pack": either a very solid cardboard that will also serve as a shipping box protected by a plastic sleeve, or standard overwrapping. To be continued.

Some will remember that I had mentioned, for the first batch, a "collector" packaging. Should we see a connection? Not at all! The packaging of the first batch will have a sleeve designed by Benjamin Rossignol (did I actually confirm this with him, by the way, I can't remember...).

The mosaic

I had already mentioned the mosaic made by Pascale for the September 12th launch — an eternity ago!

One evening, on a whim, I mobilized my two sons, Armand and Blaise, to help me paste it somewhere in Paris. Armed with a small ladder and our hoodies to go unnoticed... splash! La machine was on the wall.

A few passersby went by, but they weren't really interested. Too bad, because I'm planning to organize a contest: several mosaics will be scattered around Paris, and whoever finds one first will win la machine!
